Sampson AFB, Romulus, New York
Opened first in 1942 as a US Navy Basic Training Station from which three quarters of a million sailors entered into the World War II fighting navy.
After hostilities ceased, the military left Sampson and various civilian uses were made of its remaining facilities. These uses included a college, a state hospital, and various others. Eventually the property was converted into a state park.
Two veterans associations, The Sampson Air Force Base Veterans Association and the Sampson World War II Navy Veterans Association, converted the large brick jailhouse building into a well designed and maintained military museum. Each group occupies half of the building with its exhibits.
Each year in September, both groups meet in reunion at the old base and in nearby Waterloo, New York.
